Condom Race

What you will need

  • Pack of condoms
  • Demonstrator
  • Stopwatch / timer
  • Table
  • Optional:
    • 2 oversized t-shirts
    • 2 oversized shorts
    • 2 pairs of beer goggles

How to facilitate

Ideal for 5+ participants

The activity is a race, but can be done as individuals against the clock if you only have 1 set of resources.

  1. Set the demonstrator(s) on a desk or table at the far side of the room. Lay one condom next to the demonstrator. (For an added challenge, you could include two condoms with one being in date and one being expired to see if the correct one is selected during the activity)
  2. Have participants start at an agreed point (optional: wearing the oversized t-shirt and shorts and beer goggles).
  3. On the word "go", participants race across the room, take off the oversized clothes (optional), check the condom, place it on the demonstrator, put the clothes back on (optional) and race back to the starting point. The fastest participants wins.
  4. Upon completion, discuss any missed steps, the difficulty of rushing to put on a condom, and any other points the young people reflect on during the activity.

This activity can be done with minimal equipment such as a demonstrator and condoms only if necessary or preferred and for convenience. The oversized clothes add an element of fun and engagement, while the beer goggles add an additional level of complexity that also allows the facilitator to discuss how alcohol and drugs can impact condom use.
