What is Sex?

⏰ 15 - 20 mins
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦️ 10 people

This is a quick brainstorm activity to help break down myths and assumptions about ‘real’ sex or what counts as ‘straight’ or ‘gay’ sex.

What you will need

  • Butchers paper
  • Markers

How to facilitate

1. Work in small or large groups

2. Ask

🗣️ ASK:

"What are the many ways that people can have sex?"

"What types of sex are there?

⚠️ Important:

If participants start listing more ‘extreme’ practices that they may have heard about, it's important to refrain from either passing judgement on these OR from being derailed into excessive attention on particular acts over others. Instead, encourage participants to think about what types of sex are common for many people to experience (refrain from using the word ‘normal’).

3. During the discussion, key takeaways should include:

  1. Sex is diverse and can include many forms
  2. There is no such thing as ‘gay sex’ (despite what many people think). To emphasise this point, you can ask:
    1. What types of sex can ONLY be enjoyed by straight people?
    2. What types of sex can ONLY be enjoyed by gay people?

You will find that most activities can be enjoyed by any individual or couple regardless of their sexuality. Some activities require specific anatomy (for example, penis-in-vagina sex - though even this could include sex between partners of the same gender, like a trans man with a vagina and a cis man with a penis).
